Dave Grohl talks about Sepultura's Roots: "The most powerful album I've ever heard"

In an interview with Mojo magazine, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl spoke about his early influences and shared stories of when he first started liking heavy music. In his testimony, Grohl talks about Sepultura's 1996 album, Roots:

“When I was young, my best friend was called Jimmy (…) I used to buy my GBH records and he had ordered a Metallica album. Three weeks later I get a call: “Dude, come here now!”. He had just received the cassette tape of 'Kill 'Em All'. And that's when Jimmy and I found our common sound. And one day he discovered Sepultura. 'Arise' was the first one he bought. I loved it. The first time they played in Seattle, they were ferocious. It wasn't that common Heavy Metal aesthetic. There were dreadlocks everywhere and a lot of absurd guitar work.”

He continues: “And then Roots came out, produced by Ross Robinson and mixed by Andy Wallace. Sonically, the most powerful album I had ever heard. It made everything else sound like flea farts. That album became the benchmark for all Foo Fighters albums for ten years. It was like, 'This album sounds good, but let's compare it to the Sepultura album.' We never even came close. But it gave a perspective, 'this is heavy.' 'What are you playing? It's good, but this is heavy.'”

Foo Fighters' new album, Concrete And Gold , will be released on September 15th. The band has already released three singles: "The Line , "Run," and "The Sky Is A Neighborhood .
